Alfred BairdĀ  and Gordon Wilmsmeier presented a state of the art report on traffic flows at North European and EU Atlantic seaports also considering theĀ  impact of the economic crisis at the ESPO (European Seaports Organisation) conference in Marseille, May 14-15.

The presentation cautioned against the notion of a rapid return to port traffic growth, suggesting such outcomes will be dependent on a number of interrelated factors, not least the levels of unemployment, disposable incomes, debt, credit availability, consumption, and hence demand for goods. These factors combine to determine the levels of trade moving through Europe's seaports.Alfred Baird and Gordon Wilmsmeier emphasized to use the crisis as an opportunity to rethink traditional strategies in ports.
