Jim Hunter is a Lecturer in Civil and Railway Engineering in the School of the Built Environment. Prior to this Jim was a Principal Engineer with Scott Wilson Railway where he gained over ten years' experience in a broad range of construction and civil engineering design projects in the roles of Design Manager, Engineering and Project Manager on several multi-million pound railway civil engineering design projects.
This was attained at both feasibility and detailed design stages and also by working client-side and with contractors on various periods of secondment. He also has experience of surveying, setting out and site supervision of railway civil engineering schemes using the latest surveying and construction techniques.
He has a wide network of contacts within the Scottish and wider UK rail industry at both client, contractor and designer level having been engaged in high profile projects such as the West Coast Main Line Route Modernisation, Airdrie to Bathgate Rail Link and a recently opened Scottish Government funded Intermodal Freight Facility in Inverness.
Jim also has an in-depth knowledge of Light Rail schemes including having worked on Edinburgh Trams and has also had an on-going involvement in the Manchester Metrolink network from having undertaken an invaluable industrial placement during his time studying at Edinburgh Napier University.
He has various overseas experience including role as Permanent Way Task Manager for a 1065km Tender Alignment design for the proposed US$ 3.5 Billion Saudi Landbridge Project, the largest Civil Engineering project in the world currently under development.
In addition he was involved in leading a multi-national team of rail engineers and transport and economics experts in the preparation of a report for the Asian Development Bank's Indian Railways Investment Programme, investigating the feasibility of doubling the 245km Hospet - Tenaighat line to Goa. Here Jim was able to expand upon his knowledge of railway operations together with a wider interest in strategic transport issues.
