Electric Vehicle Research at TRI
A research team from TRI has been comparing the use of medium sized petrol cars and electric scooters over typical urban driving routes. The team, headed by TRI's Professor Tariq Muneer, compared the vehicles on the basis of energy consumption, CO2 emissions, and running costs. The study is part of a wider research aim of reducing carbon emissions from the transport sector, including looking into more sustainable forms of urban transport such as electric scooters.
Average results of the vehicle tests yielded the following figures:
Petrol car
Energy consumed for 4,000 miles 469.4 kWh
CO2 emitted for 4,000 miles 0.67 tonnes
Monetary cost for 4,000 miles £536
Electrical Scooter
Energy consumed for 4,000 miles 68.5 kWh
CO2 emitted for 4,000 miles 0.21 tonnes
Monetary cost for 4,000 miles £36
