IAME 2011: Successfull Bid by TRI, UNECLAC and ITMMA
The consortium of TRI, UN-ECLAC and ITMMA have been awarded the right to organise the Annual Conference of the International Association of Maritime Economists (IAME) in 2011.
The conference will be held in Santiago de Chile at the Headquarters of the United Nations Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (UN-ECLAC).
TRI and its partners are looking forward to bringing the Annual Conference to South America for the first time in IAME history and, by doing so, bringing a new impulse to maritime research, to the region, and at the same time strengthening ties between TRI, ITMMA and UNECLAC.
The theme of the conference is to be “Shipping markets, port devolution and a changing geography of world maritime transport”, with proposed running dates of October 31st to November 4th 2011.
Arising key topics relating to the region and the IAME conference itself currently include:
- Renegotiation of the first port concessions in the region;
- Exciting new challenges ahead in maintaining and strengthening South America’s location within the global liner shipping network;
- South America as a net exporter of commodities;
- The role of bulk shipping markets play as significant determinants of the competitiveness of the countries in the region;
- Liberalisation of cabotage being back on the political agenda and the growing interest in establishing regional cabotage regulation.
