Interreg Maritime Conference Keynote Presentation
TRI's Yakov Boglev, also representing the Northern Maritime University project, gave a keynote presentation on the topic of "Challenges in Maritime Policy, the Environmental Sphere and Training in the Sector" at a conference on International Maritime Cooperation which was held in Gothenburg on the 27th and 28th May 2009, jointly hosted by the Interreg IVa and IVb Secretariats.
The presentation focused on the EU's strategic goals and recommendations to the year 2018, the impact of this and other issues on the natural environment, and the implications for the maritime education and training sector. It was noted that the EU's maritime goals are ambitious and based on a prediction of growth in the industry. The impact of the Financial Crisis was discussed against this backdrop, with the uncertainty of the industry's future direction being pointed out (see TRI's presentation at the recent ESPO Conference for more information on this topic). The importance of the environmental sphere was discussed, particularly in relation to shipping, and its spread into every area of maritime decision making was highlighted. Finally, the education and training sector was briefly analysed and the point made: successful institutions of the future will be knowledge clusters, that is, networks of organisations that are based on the fundamental concepts of quality, transnationality, and accessibility.
