Dr Kathryn Stewart delivered speech at the UK-Japan Frontiers of Science Symposium
Kathryn Stewart delivered a paper entitled Network Modelling of Road Pricing: Current Issues and Challenges which considered the challenges inherent in modelling road pricing in realistic complex networks, the theoretical solutions which exist in the case of static models and her current work in the field utilising dynamic assignment models.“It was a great privilege for me to be asked to speak at such a prestigious event in front of my peers, and a great platform for the University." she said to Compute Scotland.
Her current and recent research projects are EPSRC: CASE (with SIAS Ltd). Modelling the behavioural responses to road tolls with microsimulation models. The Frontiers of Science (FoS) programme, which was initiated by the US National Academy of Sciences in 1989, is aimed at future leaders in science from around the world. The meetings bring together outstanding early-career scientists to discuss the latest advances in their fields, and to learn about cutting edge research in other disciplines, in a format which encourages informal networking and discussion.
The Symposium was organised in Kanagawa, Japan by the Royal Society and the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS).

Presentations 1st TRI Forum - Private Equity in Shipping and Ports
The Transport Research Institute launched the first TRI Forum on 22nd October 2008 at the Hilton Grosvenor Hotel, thus beginning a series of meetings which will present and discuss a current area of transport research and practice. The forum series will provide a unique opportunity to listen to and meet with industry experts, including the opportunity to enter into discussion within the forum. Each subsequent meeting will be hosted in Edinburgh in the early evening.
The focus of this kick-off event was “Private Equity Investment in Shipping and Ports”.
The forum discussed potential impacts of developments in financing maritime infrastructure and the potential conflict in utilising private equity finance between shipping and ports as profit generators, and the role of shipping services and ports in the wider socioeconomic context, was critically reviewed. The TRI Maritime Forum reviewed these new phenomena in financing maritime infrastructure and discussed the challenges for governments and institutions in dealing with private sector interests in strategic infrastructure assets.
