IAME 2011: Successfull Bid by TRI, UNECLAC and ITMMA
The consortium of TRI, UN-ECLAC and ITMMA have been awarded the right to organise the Annual Conference of the International Association of Maritime Economists (IAME) in 2011.
The conference will be held in Santiago de Chile at the Headquarters of the United Nations Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (UN-ECLAC).
TRI and its partners are looking forward to bringing the Annual Conference to South America for the first time in IAME history and, by doing so, bringing a new impulse to maritime research, to the region, and at the same time strengthening ties between TRI, ITMMA and UNECLAC.
The theme of the conference is to be “Shipping markets, port devolution and a changing geography of world maritime transport”, with proposed running dates of October 31st to November 4th 2011.
Arising key topics relating to the region and the IAME conference itself currently include:
- Renegotiation of the first port concessions in the region;
- Exciting new challenges ahead in maintaining and strengthening South America’s location within the global liner shipping network;
- South America as a net exporter of commodities;
- The role of bulk shipping markets play as significant determinants of the competitiveness of the countries in the region;

TRI Director Appointed as Scottish Government Advisor
The Director of the Transport Research Institute (TRI), Prof. Kevin Cullinane, was recently appointed as an adviser to the Scottish Government for its consultation document on ‘the use of cleaner vehicles and alternative fuels to reduce emissions from road transport’.
The consultation document was launched by Stewart Stevenson MSP (Minister for Transport, Infrastructure and Climate Change) at the Transport Technology and Climate Change: Building a Greener Scotland conference which was held at the Glasgow Royal Concert Hall on June 29th. The conference was perceived as a significant success and was organised by Helen Condie, James Cooper and Jill Napier of TRI, in collaboration with Scottish Enterprise, COSLA (the Convention of Scottish Local Authorities) and the Scottish Government.
Prof. Cullinane describes his involvement in the preparation of the consultation document as: "A gruelling and intense experience because of the tight deadlines, but also rather interesting because of the opportunity provided to contribute to, and help mould, emerging Scottish policy on such an important issue as road transport and climate change. It is particularly gratifying that TRI had such a pivotal involvement in the launch event for the consultation phase. Enormous thanks must go to the organising team at TRI. They have done a magnificent job in bringing the event to fruition."
