Interreg Maritime Conference Keynote Presentation
TRI's Yakov Boglev, also representing the Northern Maritime University project, gave a keynote presentation on the topic of "Challenges in Maritime Policy, the Environmental Sphere and Training in the Sector" at a conference on International Maritime Cooperation which was held in Gothenburg on the 27th and 28th May 2009, jointly hosted by the Interreg IVa and IVb Secretariats.
The presentation focused on the EU's strategic goals and recommendations to the year 2018, the impact of this and other issues on the natural environment, and the implications for the maritime education and training sector. It was noted that the EU's maritime goals are ambitious and based on a prediction of growth in the industry. The impact of the Financial Crisis was discussed against this backdrop, with the uncertainty of the industry's future direction being pointed out (see TRI's presentation at the recent ESPO Conference for more information on this topic). The importance of the environmental sphere was discussed, particularly in relation to shipping, and its spread into every area of maritime decision making was highlighted. Finally, the education and training sector was briefly analysed and the point made: successful institutions of the future will be knowledge clusters, that is, networks of organisations that are based on the fundamental concepts of quality, transnationality, and accessibility.

TRI at ESPO Conference, Marseille
Alfred Baird and Gordon Wilmsmeier presented a state of the art report on traffic flows at North European and EU Atlantic seaports also considering the impact of the economic crisis at the ESPO (European Seaports Organisation) conference in Marseille, May 14-15.
The presentation cautioned against the notion of a rapid return to port traffic growth, suggesting such outcomes will be dependent on a number of interrelated factors, not least the levels of unemployment, disposable incomes, debt, credit availability, consumption, and hence demand for goods. These factors combine to determine the levels of trade moving through Europe's seaports.Alfred Baird and Gordon Wilmsmeier emphasized to use the crisis as an opportunity to rethink traditional strategies in ports.

Research on Electric Vehicles
Pioneering work by Professor Tariq Muneer, a member of the Transport Research Institute, is showing the potential environmental benefits that electric vehicles can have on the UK transport sector's CO2 emissions. Professor Muneer's research is looking at ways that pollution can be reduced through the use of more sustainable types of transport, specifically, electric cars and electric scooters.
The Edinburgh Evening News carried two stories on the topic which can be access via the links below:
"University team shows electric vehicles on right road" (link opens in a new window).
"Capital scientists offer plug to plan for boosting electric cars" (link opens in a new window).
Other recent work by Professor Muneer in the field of harnessing solar power has resulted in the development of solar powered display boxes commonly used for advertising. Please click on the link below to download the related Scotland on Sunday news item.
