New Book: Travels and Travails of the Scots Herring Girls
UHI Millennium Institute and Edinburgh Napier University present:
The Travels and Travails of the Scots Herring Girls
In September 2006 a conference took place at Sabhal Mor Ostaig, the Gaelic College on Skye, which brought together researchers in the field of fishing communities in Scotland. This included those already established in the field, Professor Paul Thompson and Professor Jane Nadel Klein who were guest lecturers and whose research and books on fishing communities were particularly relevant to this area of work, Professor Margaret Grieco, Dr Donna Heddle and Dr Gillian Munro, along with postgraduate students who were also invited to attend and present papers.
The conference was very successful and has led to further work being undertaken and collaborations between many of those involved. It was also widely felt that it would be of benefit to publish some of the papers which were presented at the conference in this small publication, along with some other relevant articles, and it is hoped that this will be of use to others who wish to undertake research in this truly fascinating area.
Thanks must go to the Transport Research Institute of Edinburgh Napier University for funding towards both the conference and publication, and to Sabhal Mor Ostaig and UHI Millennium Institute for hosting it.
Thanks also to all those who attended the conferences, and in particular to my supervisors, Dr Donna Heddle, Dr Gillian Munro and Professor Margaret Grieco.
